For several years now, research on CBD has been progressing in the United States, England and even Israel. France is now entering the race with a slight delay and has set itself the goal of developing a medical CBD extract that can be used by pharmaceutical companies and intended to be used as a medicine for patients suffering from serious pathologies such as cancer.
Who will be in charge of the research and how could such a project be born in France?
Toulouse, the future capital of medical CBD in France?
3 years is the time allocated to the research project on medical CBD in France.
This work will be carried out by a French team of 4 chemists and biologists, at the National Polytechnic Institute of Toulouse, in collaboration with the company La Fleur.
As explained by Franck Milone, founder of La Fleur, the project consists in finding the best possible extraction process (powders, oils, …) so that the active ingredients of CBD remain intact and correspond to pharmaceutical standards. The idea is to develop medicines from CBD flowers to cure serious diseases like cancer.
Several studies have demonstrated the anti-tumor character of CBD. By killing cancerous cells and preventing them from developing, a medicine based on CBD extract could help many patients fight against relatively serious forms of cancer.
This work is also environmentally responsible.
Marion Alignan, in charge of the project, is keen to emphasize the ecological approach in which these three years of research are taking place and even talks about “sustainable chemistry”. Indeed, the laboratory has planned to bring a particular care to the environment with a minimum impact during the operations of transformation of the CBD.
The project slowed down by the regulation of CBD in France
The production and use of CBD in France is highly regulated, even when it comes to scientific studies. No difference is made, whatever its use, CBD remains illegal. Read this article from Ecowatch CBD for more info on CBD oil.
According to Franck Milone, this project has been held up for almost 2 years. This is the time it took to convince, to ask for authorizations to the National Agency of Medicine but also to the customs since the flowers of CBD necessary to the project had to be imported from another country of the European Union. According to him, “it is very complex to conduct this type of research”, everything had to be authorized, declared, etc.
This is probably why France is lagging behind on medical CBD.
Some countries have adapted and have quickly changed their legislation in the name of innovation and scientific research. They are now well ahead of France. For example, in Israel, a CBD medicine against skin cancer has already been developed. And in the United States, the FDA approves CBD for the treatment of brain cancer.
While many U.S. states are considering decriminalizing CBD , the Israeli government has provided $2 million in investment for scientific research on medical CBD since 2017. A specialization in medical CBD has even been integrated into a university training course. Since then, the USA has followed suit and universities are increasing their courses and research on CBD.
We are not there yet in France, but let’s not lose hope, even with a little delay, Europe is moving towards the legalization of medical CBD.
